YAKITAKE

The episode itself begins with Ryuuroumen-san telling both Azuma and Kawachi that even if they can cook good Yakisoba, they won't be able to beat Sachihoko unless they have an original idea for their Yakisoba bread. Azuma is depressed upon hearing this especially after he knows that even Kawachi has a good idea for his bread. Kawachi, however, encourages Azuma to do his best despite it all. The next day, group B, which includes Kawachi, begins their competition. Kawachi's opponent has created a rather delicious-looking Seafood Yakisoba bread while Kawachi himself has made a Yakisoba Sausage for his bread. I personally don't know how Kawachi managed win this because if I have a choice between Kawachi's Hot-dog looking bread versus the seafood one, I'll choose the seafood one. So that means Kawachi's Yakisoba sausage must be really good to the point that Kuroyan ends up laying on the floor trying to imitate the kanji for Dog - 犬 (Inu).

Tsukino is happy to see Kawachi winning this round and is interested to know how he came up with the idea. It turns out that since Kawachi's family is poor, he used to be unable to afford meat for his brother and sister. So in order to satisfied their meat cravings, he often grinds either Tofu or Fish and then turn them into patties or sausages. I guess in a way this is similar to how vegetarian restaurants often serve meat-shaped soy/vegetable products. Anyway, later on Sachihoko appears and begins to annoy Kawachi again. So Kawachi tells the gaijin that he believes Azuma can beat him if he puts a lot of effort into it. Sachihoko, however, believes that Azuma is not his match when it comes to Yakisoba. Ken agrees with this assessment and thinks that if this had been a normal bread tournament, Azuma will probably win. Upon hearing this Kawachi has an idea and approaches Kuroyan to ask if it's permissable. Thankfully, Kuroyan doesn't seem to have problem with it.

Meanwhile Azuma is in the middle of feeling depressed because he can't come up with a good idea for his Yakisoba bread. Upon hearing this, Kawachi appears and tells him that the person that he knows won't give up so easily and proceeds to smash a bunch of bread rolls into Azuma's face. He then presses Azuma's face into a table and tells the kid that maybe if he flatten Azuma's head, his brain will somehow work. Tsukino is shocked at this brutality but the manager encourages Kawachi to continue and tells Kawachi that he should flatten Azuma's brain like Okonomiyaki. When Azuma hears the word, he suddenly gets an idea for his Yakisoba bread and says that he's going to flattened something, as he looks into the bread he's holding. Tsukino, however, thinks that Azuma is talking about her and thinks that he's being cruel to her. So she imagines herself being flattened into the noodle machine. Heh. Because of this, Ken explains that Azuma was talking about flattening something else.

Finally the inevitable fight between Azuma and Sachihoko happens. Sachihoko produces a delicious Kouchinmi Yakisoba bread. The bread is so delicious that it makes Kuroyan feel like showing his 'who-who-dilly' (TM South Park's Cartman). Azuma, however, manages to create an even more delicious bread: Japan 59 (Okonomiyaki pan). The bread is so good that it sends Kuroyan to the Heian era (794-1185 AD), famous for its poet, Onono Komachi. Kuroyan even attempts to connect the poets' name to Azuma's bread by creating a string of word manipulations. As a result, Onono Komachi-san da ('da' is an informal version of desu) becomes Okonomiyaki Sando (Okonomiyaki sandwich). Anyway, this means Azuma is the winner, making Sachihoko unhappy because he thinks Azuma tampered with his bread. But when he finds out that a grill-pressed bread is a normal cooking method, Sachihoko proves himself to be a gracious loser and congratulates Azuma for winning the fight.
This episode itself begins with Ken telling Kawachi that her opponent, a seemingly weak-looking old woman, is actually the Queen of food preparation and the owner of 'Mother's hand' to boot. Even though Kawachi does not know what 'Mother's hand' actually meant, Ken's word never the less strikes a nerve in him. So much so that he begins to imagine him losing to the woman in a Mortal Kombat-like competition. A healthy fear for one's opponent can prove to be useful, however, since in reality Kawachi's fear forced him to do his best when the baking competition starts. In the end he manages to create a good Melon bread using crispy pie crusts which impresses Kuroyan. Kawachi is surprised to see how easily he wins the tournament and later on realises that the manager has lied to him about the whole 'Mother's hand' business.

Kawachi is angry about this because he ended up going all out on someone who he thinks is not that good of an opponent. Ken, however, tells Kawachi that he had to do that because Kawachi was getting cocky about his own ability. He thinks that Kawachi needs to do his best regardless of the opponent. Anyway, later on, Mizuno comes and start telling Tsukino that they should use the upcoming battle to determine who will become Pantasia's successor. She has even signed a contract to prove her sincerity. Much to everyone's surprise, Tsukino agrees to the condition and signs the contract. Tsukino, however, tells them that she doesn't care much about the position. She's happy to simply have the company of Azuma, Kawachi, the manager, and that small little corner store of hers. But what about poor, ignored Kinoshita? Nah! Who cares about him? :)

Not long after this, Kawachi notices a blonde-haired Gaijin talking to himself in a fluent Japanese. Kawachi's comment, however, is overheard by that said Gaijin who immediately recognises Kawachi's accent as Kansai-ben (Japanese accent used by people from Kansai region). So he then introduces himself as the Italian-American Spencer Henry....Hokou....(what a strange last name for an Italian-American), a Pantasia rep from Nagoya as well as Azuma's next opponent. Anyway, it's obvious that Shachihoko, the way Spencer's friend normally called him, does not get along with Kawachi and that Kawachi wants Azuma to beat the guy as well as Mizuno's Koala. Mizuno, however, knows that Spencer is a tough opponent to beat and that she actually once tried to recruit him for her store but he preferred to represent the Nagoya store.

Anyway, Kuroyan soon announce the next competition theme: Yakisoba (fried noodles) Pan. He wants the participants to use Pantasia's bread roll to make a good Yakisoba Bread. As an added incentives, the creator of the best Yakisoba bread will receive 100,000 Yen prize money. Kawachi is surprised about this sudden generousity from Pantasia so Ken tells him that Pantasia wants to expand their business into Schools and Konbini (convenient store) by creating some fast food items. This is why the competition has so far included some convenience breads such as Melon bread and Yakisoba Pan. Throughout all of this, however, Azuma is being quiet so Kawachi wonders why he's so depressed. It turns out Azuma never makes Yakisoba before. He's made the bread but the one who cooks the Yakisoba has always been his sister.

Because of this, the manager decides to take Azuma and Kawachi to Chinatown to meet an old buddy of his, Ryuuroumen-san. Heh, I'm wondering if that name supposed to be a pun as in 'Dragon Noodle person'. Ryuuroumen is apparently an expert assassin as well as...Noodle chef. The guy's Yakisoba is so good to the point that Kawachi starts doing one of those lame 美味い - Umai (Delicious) pun. This time, it's pronounced as 美麺ー (Umen). If the Kanjis are read together, they are actually meaningless. But if they are read separately, you get 美 - Beauty and 麺 - Noodles, rougly translated to "Delicious Noodles". Anyway, despite Ryuuroumen's coaching, Azuma seems to be really bad at cooking ramen. This worries Ryuuroumen and Ken especially after they realise that Spencer Henry is a well-known expert who created 'Kouchinmi' Yakisoba bread using Nagoya's special 'Koumi' sauce and the local 'Kouchin' chicken. Can Azuma beat this guy?
Anyway, this episode begins with everyone from the Southern Pantasia store looking depressed when they realised that Azuma sucks at making Melon bread. Thankfully, not long after this, the owner of the Sushi shop that Azuma met on his way to Izu has come to look for him. Apparently he wants to prove to Azuma that he's not a stingy bastard so he comes with a bunch of Sushi materials so he can feed Azuma and his friends for free. In the middle of the Sushi banquet, however, Azuma gets an idea for his Melon Bread and immediately bolts out to look for the ingredients. During the competition, Mizuno tries to intimidate other Southern Pantasia store's employees by showing them that she's going to use the most expensive Melon available to make her Melon bread. Not long after this, everyone in Group A completed his or her Melon bread and Kuroyan immediately fails everyone who failed to make a good one. Strangely, he doesn't say one nasty word to the losers.

Well, the truth is, instead of saying it out loud, this time Kuroyan decides to whisper lots of nasty insults to the losers' ear to drive down that metaphorical knife to the heart of the losers. As usual though, Kuroyan is taken aback when he sees Azuma's Melon Bread aka Japan 58. The bread looks like Sushi with the bottom part being glued together with a Melon Cream to the crunchy top part of the bread. His reaction to the bread seems to be a good indicator of how good the bread turns out to be. So he declares Azuma the winner. Mizuno is pissed off because Kuroyan hasn't even tried her delicious Melon Bread (oops, unintentional pun there). But Kuroyan tells her what's delicious in her Melon Bread is not the bread but the Melon itself. So it's no dice since this is a Bread competition. Unhappy with her failure, Mizuno refuses to call Tsukino 'Sis' despite her promise. The episode then ends with Ken looking worried about Kawachi's u
